She is pursuing a degree in Organization Administration with an eye toward ending up being a service law attorney in the future. Her winning essay covered the topic of her trauma (PTSD) and its effect on her ability to study.
“I signed up with the U.S. Navy in 2011. I understood that I would enlist from an early age because I wished to follow in my daddy’s steps just as he had actually followed his dad’s footsteps,” Alvarado writes.
During her time in the Navy, she certainly measured up to her heritage. Alvarado became a Corpsman, finished Advanced X-Ray Tech C School (first in her class), earned two Associate’s Degrees, and was acknowledged by her superiors as Sailor of the Month, Bluejacket of the Quarter, and Bluejacket of the Year.
However, her life’s trajectory was significantly altered in 2015. “I was attacked, and my life was forever altered,” she writes. Following her assault, she was identified with PTSD, had problem maintaining her grades, and gave up her imagine becoming a medical professional.
The stress and anxiety was so bad that she was unable to go to classes, and her short pursuit of a beauty school degree was also hampered by PTSD. Now, Alvarado is completing her bachelor’s degree online at Western Governors University. She prepares to study for the LSAT and become an Organization Law attorney after graduation.
